I’m going to a charity speed dating event hosted by my station in a few weeks. Have you ever gone to one of these? Got any tips? – J

If the movies are any indication of how these things work, and I assume they are, then you are in for some outrageous comedy. I think the trick to being successful is to 1) appear confident but not like your SO above the situation, no one wants to date someone desperate or someone who is looking down on them. Actually… that’s it. The 2) and 3) I wrote were variations on 1). Dress sharply, put on your best face, and don’t think you’re going to meet The Perfect One. It is a great opportunity to try different approaches and ask the girls themselves what they like and don’t like. Being a good listener is also a good thing. People like talking about themselves.

I went to one of these once when I lived in Austin. I didn’t take it very seriously and had a great time. So relax, listen, and have fun. I would suggest wearing a nice shirt. You can’t help but like someone who’s wearing a nice shirt.
